Key Clothing Items for FTM Individuals

First, your FTM clothes should flatter your body type, and only then can you choose colors and patterns. It is quite common for transgender guys to hide behind baggy clothes, and it is completely fine as long as you feel comfortable. On the other hand, wearing something that fits you shows everyone around you that you feel great in your body. Nothing suits you better than self-confidence.

Finding suitable clothes won't be difficult if you have a masculine body shape (wide shoulders, small hips, flat chest). If your body shape is feminine, finding the right clothes could be a challenge, but with different patterns and models, everything is possible.

FTM Binders

Binders are essential for many FTM individuals as they help create a flatter chest appearance. It’s important to choose a binder that is safe and comfortable. Here are some recommendations:

  • Safety First: Avoid wearing binders for more than 8 hours a day and never sleep in them. Choose binders that fit well without being too tight to prevent breathing difficulties or skin irritation.
  • Recommended Brands: GC2B and Underworks are popular for their quality and comfort. These brands offer a variety of styles and sizes to fit different needs.
  • Care Tips: Wash your binder regularly and follow the care instructions to maintain its shape and elasticity.

In addition, there are some general do’s and don'ts that you must know before chest binding:

  • Use elastic bandages, sports bras, compression wear, neoprene, or even layer your clothes.
  • Choose the right size—the binder shouldn’t make you feel too tight, restrict your movements or breathing, or cause pain or cuts. Too tight chest binding may lead to rashes (since the skin doesn’t breathe and gets sweaty), scarring, and even breast deformation.
  • Take care of your body. If you feel discomfort (for example, pain or trouble breathing), remove your binder immediately since it doesn’t fit or you are wearing it continuously. Chest binding should never cause discomfort.

  • Do not use plastic wrap, duct tape, or bandages, as they can damage your skin.
  • Avoid wearing binders for extended periods (8-12 hours). People who are prone to wearing binders more frequently often experience negative effects.
  • Do not wear a binder while sleeping or working out. During physical activities, you need to be able to breathe freely, and you should wear appropriate clothing that allows your skin to breathe and sweat. Also, if you are going to wear it at night, your body won’t be able to rest properly.
  • Avoid binding if you are planning to have breast reconstruction surgery. Binding for longer periods can affect your skin elasticity, making the surgery more complex.

FTM Shirts and Tops

When it comes to shirts and tops, the fit is important. Wear clothes that are neither too tight nor too loose. Here are some tips to help you choose the right tops:

Material:  Shirts make you look more masculine, especially button-down models of structured cotton or linen. Avoid wearing very tight materials that cling to your body, such as synthetics and silk. Try tighter shirts on your shoulders or arms and loose ones in the middle section. You can also bend the edges of the sleeves to make your arms look even bigger. Or you can roll up your sleeves, creating broader shoulders and taking attention away from the chest. If you must choose between a short-sleeved shirt and long sleeves, we suggest you pick a long-sleeved shirt and simply roll it up a little. In this way, even the smallest hands will look bigger. Avoid baggy shirts since they will make you look even smaller.

Patterns and Colors: Shirts with designs are also a great solution since they draw attention away from the body shape. If you feel self-conscious, try wearing darker colors. Dark colors, such as black, dark grey, or blue, hide the body shape and all the curves. So if you are not sure if the piece of clothing fits you, but you still want to buy it, opt for a darker color, just in case.

Advice for T-Shirts

  • T-shirts can often highlight the chest and curves, which might not be desirable for a masculine look.
  • Consider athletic T-shirts, which are stretchy and cling to the hips rather than the waist, providing a more masculine shape. These shirts create a straight line from hips to shoulders, enhancing a masculine appearance.

Following these guidelines, you can select shirts and tops that help you feel confident and look more masculine.

FTM Pants and Bottoms

Finding the right pants can make a significant difference in your overall appearance. Here are some tips for selecting the best pants and bottoms:

Sizing Tips: First, you need to find a suitable size. Men’s sizing can be confusing and different from FTM clothing sizes, so we recommend trying each piece before buying. Also, a great trick might help you find fitting pants or jeans when trying them on - you can grab loose material around the back of your thighs. If there is a handful of fabric, pants will be too baggy. If you only grab about an inch of material, there will be enough space to move freely without looking saggy; in other words, it’s a perfect size.

It’s understandable if you don’t feel confident about the lower part of your body, but you should ensure that the material in your private area is not too loose since it will make you look shorter and less masculine. One way or another, you’ll learn your size as time passes.

Tips for the Right Shape: Although two sizes of bigger pants seem tempting, try not to hide behind baggy clothing. Don’t choose skinny jeans either—unless you have masculine legs.

Skinny jeans are tight and emphasize curves, hips, and bottoms. Skinny jeans are a no-go if you're wondering how to hide hips.

So, you’re probably wondering - are any men’s pants suitable for FTM’s? Simple black, dark blue, or khaki regular-fit trousers are a must in every trans guy’s wardrobe; they are a basic garment only FTM guys have. Straight pants or jeans are the best option since it hides the difference between ankles and hips, which is usually a very defining trait of a feminine body. It also balances the proportions of your body if worn together with a proper top to achieve a very masculine look.

Choosing Shorts

Shorts Fit: Choosing shorts is generally easier than pants or shirts. Shorts are usually wider and don't draw attention to unwanted areas.
Fit and Style: If you have wider hips, lower your shorts to imitate a man’s hips, increasing your chances of passing as a male. Avoid tight shorts; opt for slightly bigger but well-fitting models.

Following these tips, you can select pants and bottoms that enhance your appearance and boost your confidence.

Formal FTM Outfits

Choosing the right formal wear as an FTM individual can significantly affect how you present yourself. Here's how to ensure you look flawless in formal attire.

Start by finding the right size. If your formal wear is too tight, it will emphasize your curves; if it's too big, you might look like a child wearing their parent's clothes. Neither option is ideal. Aim for a suit that is slightly loose but not too much for a perfect fit. When measuring yourself, leave space between the measuring tape and your body (approximately the width of two fingers). This method helps ensure that your suit fits comfortably without being too tight or too loose. Suits are excellent for FTM individuals as they conceal curves and emphasize a masculine shape.

Next, consider the style. You can opt for a two-piece suit, which includes a jacket and pants, or a three-piece suit, which adds a waistcoat. Waistcoats and vests are beneficial as they provide a square-ish, masculine shape. Remember, it's better not to fasten the last button of your jacket; leaving it unbuttoned is a common practice among men and looks more natural. Stick to fastening the first or middle button instead. When it comes to color, start with darker shades, as they traditionally convey masculinity and classiness.

Complete your look with manly accessories like ties, watches, and cufflinks. These elements enhance your outfit and add a touch of sophistication and confidence.

By focusing on the right fit, style, and accessories, you can create a polished and masculine appearance for any formal occasion.

The right footwear can complete your outfit and boost your confidence. Here are some tips for choosing the best footwear:

  • Choosing the Right Shoes: Select shoes that are both stylish and comfortable. Sneakers, boots, and dress shoes can all be great options, depending on the occasion.
  • Recommended Brands: Dr. Martens and Converse offer a range of shoes that are both fashionable and comfortable.

Tips to Create a Masculine Silhouette

Creating a masculine silhouette is often a key goal for FTM individuals when choosing clothing. Here are some tips to help achieve this look:

  1. Layering
  • Undershirts and Tank Tops: Wear undershirts or tank tops under your shirts to create a smoother chest area and add an extra layer of structure.
  • Layering with Shirts: Use button-down shirts over t-shirts to add depth and dimension to your outfit. This can help create a broader shoulder appearance.
  1. Choosing the Right Fit

Opt for clothes that are tailored to fit your body well. Avoid overly baggy clothes that can make you look boxy and shapeless. Choose clothing made from structured fabrics like cotton, denim, or wool, which hold their shape and can create a more defined silhouette.

  1. Enhancing Shoulders
  • Shoulder Pads: Consider using shoulder pads in jackets and blazers to enhance the appearance of broader shoulders.
  • Raglan Sleeves: Tops with raglan sleeves, which extend in one piece fully to the collar, creating a diagonal seam from the underarm to the collarbone, can help make your shoulders look broader.
  1. Minimizing Hips

Choose straight-leg or slim-fit pants that provide a balanced look from hips to ankles. Dark-colored bottoms can help minimize the appearance of wider hips.

  1. Accessorizing Wisely
  • Belts: Use belts to define your waistline and create a more masculine silhouette. Position the belt slightly lower on your hips.
  • Hats: Wearing hats can draw attention upward and away from the hips and chest, contributing to a more masculine appearance.

Personal Style Development

Developing a personal style that reflects your personality and gender identity is an empowering journey. Here are some steps to help you find and refine your unique style:

  1. Explore and Experiment

Don’t be afraid to experiment with various styles, from casual to formal, until you find what makes you feel most comfortable and confident. Combine different pieces from various styles to create a look that is uniquely yours. The process of mixing and matching can help you discover combinations that suit you best.

  1. Find Inspiration

Seek inspiration from public figures, celebrities, or influencers whose style you admire. Pay attention to the elements of their style that you can incorporate into your wardrobe. Use fashion magazines, blogs, and social media platforms like Pinterest and Instagram to discover new trends and ideas. This exposure can broaden your understanding of what’s possible and what resonates with you.

  1. Prioritize Comfort

Choose clothes that not only look good but also feel good. Comfort is key to confidence; wearing comfortable clothing can significantly boost your self-assurance. Invest in high-quality pieces that will last longer and feel better on your body. Prioritizing quality over quantity ensures that your wardrobe is both functional and stylish.

  1. Build a Versatile Wardrobe

Start with essential items like well-fitting jeans, versatile shirts, and good shoes. These foundational pieces can be mixed and matched to create multiple outfits. Add a few statement pieces that reflect your personality and can be used to elevate your look for special occasions. Building a versatile wardrobe allows you to adapt your style to different contexts and events while maintaining a cohesive personal aesthetic.
